Sydney Airport has appointed two global firms as lead consultants for its domestic terminal integration project.

Grimshaw and Mott MacDonald will lead the architectural design and engineering respectively for the program, which will see the T2 and T3 domestic terminals joined into one larger precinct with gates added to serve some international traffic.

“Our $6 billion capital program is critical to maintaining an efficient, high-quality experience for airlines and passengers as we grow towards our Master Plan forecast of 72 million passengers a year by 2045,” Scott Charlton, chief executive of the airport, said.

“By partnering with world-class firms like Grimshaw and Mott MacDonald we’re strengthening our ability to deliver major projects that support jobs, economic growth and Sydney’s role as Australia’s global gateway.”

In the airport’s 2045 master plan, the T2 terminal – currently home to Virgin Australia, Jetstar, and other regional airlines – and the T3 Qantas domestic terminal will be joined together, with up to 12 new international gates also to be added to the precinct alongside two more at T1 International.

According to Paul Willis, Sydney Airport’s group executive for planning and delivery, the approach “reflects the scale and complexity of the airport’s upcoming infrastructure program”.

“Establishing long-term partnerships with leading design and engineering firms gives us greater consistency across projects, improves coordination between disciplines, and helps us move faster from concept to delivery while maintaining the highest standards of safety, sustainability and design quality,” he said.

The integration project is a “central element” of the master plan, Sydney Airport says, and will bring T2 and T3 in line with Western Sydney International (WSI), which will open with a combined domestic and international terminal including “swing gates” that can switch between the two.

“The project will expand terminal capacity, improve airline efficiency, and deliver a more seamless passenger journey, including the introduction of up to 12 new swing gates to support both domestic and international operations,” the airport said in a press release.

“The initial phase of the project will involve the development of early design plans, site surveys, and risk identification, all of which will help with upcoming approvals and planning processes.

“The move to long-term design partnerships is expected to enable faster decision-making, stronger integration across disciplines and a more consistent approach across Sydney Airport’s infrastructure portfolio.”

Sydney Airport last year recorded its highest-ever annual figures for international traffic.
